Another Fucking Royal Disgrace

Dearest readers, friends, students of the University of Edinburgh – today we have an important and grave message for you. Do not attend lectures. Give up on your tutorials. Fight the temptation to go to the library cafe for a typically delicious toastie.  Forgo entering any university building, for this may seen as criminally suspicious activity, and lead to your arrest.

Yesterday saw the University hold a ceremony for the doling out of honorary degrees in McEwan Hall, attended by the university chancellor and princess royal, Anne Windsor. Although students were notified of some restrictions of access to areas of the medical school, no other such restrictions were announced. Later that day, two students were confronted by staff and then arrested whilst sitting reading at Old College, where Anne happened to have a temporary office.

Just to be clear here, two students were arrested for being coincidentally in the vicinity of a member of the royal family. They didn’t even know that Anne was there.

Anne took the post of chancellor two years ago amid some controversy – the university announced that nominations for chancellor were open via a small advert in The Scotsman, with no consultation with students, staff, or indeed anyone at all, leading to Anne running for the position unelected. This almost-but-not-quite-really method of democratic process lead to a protest outside her inauguration, with one student memorably describing the whole affair as “A fucking disgrace”.

It’s hard to draw any conclusion other than the university acting with supreme paranoia and hysteria, in a bid to avoid another embarrassment or (shock horror) upsetting a member of the royal family. As a result, the rights of two students to do some studying in a university building have been trampled on, for having the wrong faces at the wrong time.

So, don’t go to class. There might be an important person passing nearby, and who knows what you might be up to?

UPDATE: the “actual journalists” at The Student have named the students involved as Euan Kidston and Hona Cohen-Fuentes. Euan is quoted as saying:

“I’m still in shock. We were quietly studying and had no idea the building was closing. There was no need for violence, we were happy to find somewhere else to study.”

with Hona adding:

“I was reading philosophy when I was assaulted in a building I assumed to be safe, before being put in a prison cell. The privilege and priority given to Princess Anne is a disgrace, especially as students have already voted to remove her as Chancellor.”

There are also reports of “xenophobic abuse” being used by university staff.

The police and uni are unsurprisingly silent at this time.
